Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS Service Gets Standalone Mobile Apps for Android, iOS
Cloudflare has expanded its privacy-focused DNS service, 1.1.1.1, to Android and iOS users. Initially introduced as a web-based service in April, the aim of this service is to provide a secure web browsing experience by channeling all DNS data through Cloudflare’s dedicated 1.1.1.1 DNS servers. While mobile users could previously access the native 1.1.1.1 website, Cloudflare has now released standalone apps for Android and iOS devices, offering native support after an initial testing phase through a beta channel.
Similar to the web version, Cloudflare’s new 1.1.1.1 app secures all DNS queries from ISPs and webmasters. Additionally, it claims to enhance internet speed by utilizing Cloudflare’s global content delivery network (CDN), providing an average 28 percent faster experience than the “next fastest public resolver.” The app functions with VPN support, directing all mobile traffic through 1.1.1.1 DNS servers, delivering a speedier experience compared to many other VPN services.
After installing the 1.1.1.1 app on a mobile device, users need to install Cloudflare’s VPN profile to encrypt DNS queries. It’s important to note that other VPN apps on the device will become inactive when using the 1.1.1.1 app.
Cloudflare asserts that it does not charge any in-app purchases through the 1.1.1.1 app, as it receives payments from website owners to optimize internet speed. This distinguishes it as an appealing option compared to other DNS resolvers. Moreover, the company assures users that it does not sell any user data.
The 1.1.1.1 app is available for free download on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. It is compatible with devices running at least Android 5.0 Lollipop or iOS 10.3, and it works not only on smartphones and iPhones but also on Android tablets and iPads.
